Using Sky Drone FPV with Mission Planner for full 4G/LTE drone control

Posted by Sky Drone Team on

With the Sky Drone FPV Client software you get low latency HD video over the 4G/LTE network out of the box. But to leverage the full potential of the system you want to connect a Ground Control Station software to it, that allows you not only to visualize telemetry data but also control the drone over the LTE network. This will make it a true unlimited-range system. You can control a drone on the other side of the globe or one just in front of you.

Sky Drone FPV does not lock you in to a specific GCS solution but gives you the freedom to choose. This article will show you how to use the popular and powerful solution Mission Planner with it.

Here is how all parts connect to each other:

Sky Drone FPV 2 with Mission Planner

After you connected to your Sky Drone FPV unit using the Sky Drone FPV Client software, it automatically exposes the MAVLink channel as a local TCP server on port 5235. All you need to do in Mission Planner is to configure your connection setting:

Settings are:

Connection Type: TCP
Host Address: 127.0.0.1
Remote Port: 5235

After that you hit connect and that's it. Now you have full unlimited-range remote control of your drone.

Here is a demo video that shows how the Sky Drone FPV 2 + Mission Planner connection works over 4G/LTE:

All tech specs of the Sky Drone FPV 2 can be found on the official Sky Drone FPV 2 product page.

  • @Max: As mentioned in the product description, Sky Drone FPV 2 does already adjust the bitrate, bandwidth-usage, frame rate, etc during flight. Depending on the current conditions, those parameters are adjusted to provide the most fluent video transmission possible.

  • @Frank: Sky Drone FPV 2 works only with the supplied camera. The system is optimized to that specific camera, its video codec, color space and encoding performance. If you want to use your own camera, please have a look at Sky Drone Link.

@Dennis: Almost all of our customers are professional companies, government contractors and research facilities. Unfortunately, most of such do not publicize their work.

  • Am interested in your FPV system. Am I locked into using the camera you supply or can I use the USB cameras I currently own?

  • I don’t find any video of a single costumer in YouTube?!!!?? and you sent more than 1500 order this past year?. Are you really exist? Do you really have the real product?.

  • Is there a way to dynamically manually limit the birate of the video from the ControlStation/Skydrone client during flight?

Is there a way to zoom in on a certain part of the camera feed during flight? (And only send the zoomed-in part through the link, utilizing all of the bandwidth for that zoomed in section, instead of the whole video.)
